Bookers Sometimes, venues have someone in charge of booking the shows for the club - but it is really very important to not confuse these people with promoters. Sometimes, venues have in-house promoters that book the shows and fulfill the traditional role of the promoter, but venues often have someone who just books. They may include your name in their standing run of advertising and monthly calendar things, but the onus for promoting the show - and meeting the venues financial requirements - falls on you. They may have a bare minimum that you have to meet or they may require a certain number of ticket pre-sales or they may have some other financial guideline you have to satisfy. As a musician, it is REALLY important for you to understand these rules. Of course, venues cant have losing nights all the time, but weigh up what theyre offering you versus what theyre demanding from you. Are they throwing you on a bill with four other bands who sound nothing like you (or each other) and requiring a huge number of ticket pre-sales - which really translate into you paying hundreds to play there? In other words, are they setting you up for some crap gig that no one wants to come to and get you to pay them for the privilege? If you are acting as a promoter for your own show, it makes sense that you would have to assure the venue that they arent going to lose money on the night, but dont be too intimidated to speak up to find out what youre getting when you book a show at that club and definitely dont be too afraid to look for another venue who wants to make sure you BOTH have a winning night. Agents An agent books shows for you. In other words, the agent calls the promoter, works out the deal and brings the offer back to you with all the details ironed out (in accordance with what youve agreed in advance, such as must have a stage large enough for 7 cellos or will only play Albuquerque on Tuesdays.) As you can see, your real da nger zone as an up and coming musician lies in the difference between working with a promoter and simply booking a show with someone in charge of a venue calendar. Make sure you understand the set-up any time you book. And note, someone who pencils you in on a certain date, contributes nothing in the run-up to the show and then sits at a door collecting money and asking people what band they came to see is leid a promoter - pure and simple. Its an achievement Im very proud of. Your fifties are the time when you start to notice the ages on the obituaries you read or hear on TV- and its uncomfortable to watch those numbers veer too close to yours. (Admittedly, its actually terrifying when a few of those ages are actually younger than yours) Theres only so far denial can take you. And at 59, I realized a handful of friends and colleagues didnt make it to 60. So, Im ecstatic to be here- in good health and with a family I love, and lots of caring friends around me.But there was one telling, frightening moment. As I prepared my Facebook post announcing Id made it to the starting line of my seventh decade, my fingers froze in the air. I tend to be thoughtful and careful about my career- I know that there are things that can damage years of work in less than a second, especially on social media. I had to ask myself Was I really ready to post my age for all 9,000 of my followers to see? When I wrote my editors letters for More magazine, I had a wonderful executive editor who would read and edit my work and try to save me from my blatant honesty. She would ask Do you really want to tell the truth about a management clash that could make your boss mad? Do you really want to expose the antics of a titelblatt star- or her handler- that might take More off their list of magazines for the future? I tend to walk right up to the edge of dangerous truth-telling and came to rely on the wonderful Judy to keep me from slipping over it- and potentially losing my job.So, Im ashamed to say that my finger hovered above the post button Wednesday for one reason I knew that if I posted my age, Id be killing my chances of ever getting a job in corporate America. Very few companies will take on someone five years from retirement who could run up their healthcare costs or become too hard to fire because theyre a protected class. Of course, no one will admit that youre too old to hire to your face- and corporate HR departments have been taught to twist themselves into pretzels to make sure no one hints that age is a problem. But anyone whos walked the corridors of corporations knows the truth that once you cross 50 you notice that the air near the top of your profession begins to thin out, and you might even be the only one in your age group left in your division. The staff working around you starts looking noticeably younger, and you start to worry that when times get tough and management is hankering for a speedy Q4 downsize that the salary you killed yourself to attain could be a big red bullseye. I also remember the hundreds of More readers who wrote to me after The Great Recession that said theyd been downsized from their prestigious corporate jobs. Theyd sent resumes to over 400 job openings, only to receive zero responses. I didnt have the heart to tell them what I knew even then that women over 50 were never going to be welcomed back to corporate life, that their only option for making money going forward was as an independent entrepreneur. Its no surprise to me that a 2015 Kauffman Institute Index notes the number of new entrepreneurs between ages 55 and 64 rose from 14.8% in 1997 to 25.8% in 2015.Though Ive never hidden my age, I look younger, and so people tend to forget it. So, when I ultimately decided to press the button on that Facebook post, I was accepting that my time as an up-and-comer had long ago expired- and that independence was going to be my only direction forward in the future. But push it I did. Of course, the overwhelming response from my friends and colleagues was of joy and good wishes. One friend whod already crossed over mentioned her delight at the end of striving. Many others- both male and female- spoke of the opportunity to finally be free to be themselves. All the research Ive read- or had done at More- pointed to the sixties being everyones happiest decade, and I was getting that message. I definitely have the sense that Im stepping onto an uncharted pathway thatll be challenging but fascinating. I also know this Part of my happiness will come from changing just one persons mind about what 60 looks and feels like- and perhaps convincing just one person in charge of hiring at some business somewhere that age really is just a number. The reason is, in the end, U.S. employers are most impressed by college students who were highly involved during their studies- and had jobs while in school. Note that U.S. work experience will not only make you more competitive as an H-1B visa job seeker come graduation but will also add a completely different dimension to your experience as an international student. Luckily, there are several ways for international students to get hired while completing their studies. Here, below, are four of the most common ways international students on F-1 visas can work in the U.S. 1. On-campus employment How does a part-time job at your university library or bookstore sound? How about a job as a Resident Assistant at your dorm in exchange for room and board? These and other opportunities like them are typically available for F-1 students after their first years of school. If you think that jobs unrelated to your ultimate employment goals are not worthwhile, keep in mind that work opportunities unrelated to your major do have value and do impress U.S. employers. Any work that demonstrates leadership, communication, or problem solving skills will impress employers. Even working just a few hours a week at your university shows U.S. hiring managers that you're a highly engaged student. In order to gain even more work experience, here’s something else to consider: As opposed to going home to visit your family and friends during your school breaks, stay in the U.S. to maximize your breaks by gaining more U.S. work experience. Visit your career center to learn about summer job opportunities and look for job opportunities that allow you to have as much interaction with Americans as possible. 2. Off-campus employment Keep in mind that you're not authorized to work off campus unless you have authorization from your university. Also keep in mind that your university might be able to authorize you to work off campus under the premise of economic hardships. For example, if there's a severe devaluation of your home country currency against the U.S. dollar, and all of a sudden you can’t pay for your tuition anymore, you might then qualify to work off campus under the economic hardship rule. Or, say that your father is the one paying for your studies, and all of a sudden he loses his job. Such an event could also qualify for economic hardship. You get the idea. Any unexpected change in your ability to continue to pay for your studies might qualify as economic hardship. If you think you find yourself in this situation, investigate your options. 3. Curricular Practical Training (CPT) If you can’t work off campus under the economic hardship rule, then Curricular Practical Training might be an option, if it’s available to you. This is one of the most attractive programs for international student who wish to work off-campus. CPT is designed to give students real-world experience in their field, like an internship or practicum with a partnering employer. Some college majors offer CPT, but many don’t. If you pick a degree that doesn’t offer CPT, that is okay. But keep in mind that your opportunities to gain off-campus work experience could be more limited. Get informed and ask the right questions. Recently, the value of CPT has increased dramatically because CPT is handled entirely by universities, without any government intervention. International students who take the CPT route for summer internships automatically eliminate the uncertainties they could possibly face to due to processing delays associated with Optional Practical Training, for example (more on OPT below). If your chosen college major does not offer CPT, consider approaching the right individuals from your school to see if it would be possible to add CPT to your program of study. And note that if CPT is available to you, it is normally best to keep your CPT work to less than 20 hours a week if you plan on competing for an H-1B visa after graduation If you participate in full time CPT for 12 months or more, you will not be eligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT). Without the option to leverage OPT after graduation, your odds of securing permanent employment in the U.S. will be greatly diminished. Accrual of part-time CPT does not affect eligibility for OPT, which has great value to U.S. employers because it’s a hassle free way for them to initially hire international students. 4. Optional Practical Training (OPT) Optional Practical Training is a well-known program among international students that refers to temporary employment relating to your field of study. For example, working at a bank would qualify if you're studying finance. Currently, certain STEM majors get to enjoy up to 36 months of OPT, while non-STEM majors normally only receive 12 months of OPT. Unlike CPT, which is handled entirely by your university, OPT requires the involvement of the U.S. government, and this has proven to be a disadvantage for the OPT program these days. There are two types of OPT: Option 1: Pre-completion OPT This option is normally available once you have completed one full academic year at a U.S. college or university. You can work up to 20 hours a week when school is in session or full time when it’s not. Some international students who secure summer internships rely on pre-completion OPT in order to be able to work in the U.S. Processing times for OPT applications are not supposed to exceed 90 days, but this year some applicants faced wait times up to five months. The result? Many international students across the U.S. have missed their scheduled start date for their summer internships. Event worse: in some instances, international students could not start their summer internships at all. Option 2: Post-completion OPT Those who are authorized for post-completion OPT can work either part time or full time after graduation, and normally the work can be paid or unpaid. You need to make sure you find employment related to your field of study. If you’re studying accounting, a job at an advertising firm designing logos will not qualify as OPT employment. A final note Even if you're not ready to start looking for jobs and/or haven’t picked a major, it’s important to meet with the right people from your school as soon as possible so you can learn about all the work programs that might be available to you as an F-1 student. Understand the regulations you need to follow in order to secure employment in the U.S., and don’t be shy about applying for jobs. Remember to never accept any type of employment in the U.S., even volunteer or unpaid, without first checking with your university. If you see a job listed at your university that excites you or if you learn about a cool off-campus internship related to your major, before you apply for these positions you must first find out if you’re eligible to work. Get started by scheduling two appointments. The first one will be with your designated school official (DSO). Most likely, this individual works at your International Student Services office. Your second appointment should be with a career services staff member. Be sure to communicate to both of these individuals that you have every intention to maximize any program that will allow you to work on-campus and off-campus while you're completing your degree. And if you’re currently completing and crushing your summer internship, look for ways to become indispensable  so your employer asks you to continue working for them in the fall. And if your employer does not bring up this possibility, be brave and do so yourself. Create a proposal that outlines your deliverables for the fall and get the conversation going with your manager. Remember: if your plan is an H-1B job in the U.S. after graduation, the more work experience you can accumulate during your studies the better. If you’re lucky enough to receive applications for this hard-to-fill position, you’ll want to go into the interviews ready to make quick decisions. But if you don’t have a strong background in this framework, how can you be certain your interview questions will help you identify the best candidate?   To help, we’ve prepared a cheat sheet of 16 essential .NET developer interview questions with background and sample answers, as well as a few other tips to assist in making your search more successful. And when you’re ready to make an offer, visit our salary center to learn the average starting pay for a .NET programmer in your area. You don’t want to lowball in this competitive hiring market.   Now, let’s get started.   First, a word about these top .NET interview questions…   If you’re interviewing a .NET developer, you should be somewhat familiar with programming. If you’re not, then bring in someone from your team who is. These conversations will get very technical, very quickly.   Also, keep in mind the following QAs are intended to serve as a guide, not a bible. As a hiring manager, you may need to tailor these questions for the responsibilities of your specific job opening. You should also allow some leeway on candidates’ answers to reflect their individual backgrounds and experience with ASP, code and various frameworks. 1. What is OOP, and how does it relate to the .NET Framework? OOP stands for object-oriented programming. A good answer to this question would point out that OOP languages such as Visual Basic.NET, C# and C++ are the core languages supported by .NET Framework. (There is also support for functional programming in the form of F#.)   As a technique, OOP allows .NET developers to create classes containing methods, properties, fields, events and other logical modules. It also lets developers create modular programs, which they can assemble as applications. OOPs have four basic features: encapsulation, abstraction, polymorphism and inheritance. 2. What is encapsulation? Encapsulation is one of four basic features of OOP and refers to the inclusion within a program object of methods and data needed for the object to function. For .NET interview questions like this, candidates should mention that encapsulation helps keep data from unwanted access through binding code and data in an object, which is the basic, single self-contained unit of a system. Another way of understanding encapsulation is to think of it as “hiding” the state of an object as private or protected. Under this principle of information hiding, the internal workings of an object are segregated from the rest of the application. This is useful because it makes it less likely that other objects can modify the state or behavior of the object in question. 3. Explain the concept of inheritance and how it works in .NET. In general OOP terms, inheritance means that a class can be based on another class, with the child class taking on the attributes of the parent class. For example, coders can create a class called Vehicle, and then child classes called Truck, Car and Motorcycle - all of which inherit the attributes of Vehicle. To demonstrate their understanding of the interview question and the framework, candidates may bring up how .NET supports single inheritance only, which means that a class can inherit only from one other class. Their answer may also touch on the transitive nature of inheritance - for example, the Ford class inherits from Car, which inherits from Vehicle. 4. What is the difference between an abstract class and an interface? An abstract class is always used as a base class. It provides some abstract/virtual members that the inheriting entities must implement, as well as a partial implementation for a functionality. For extra credit, job candidates might mention that this class can also declare fields. Developers cannot create an object from this class. An interface, on the other hand, can declare properties, methods and events only (no access modifiers). The developer must implement all declared members. In short, an interface designates a contract/behavior that implementing classes should have. HIRE A .NET DEVELOPER NOW 5. What is the difference between a class and an object, and how do these terms relate to each other? A class is a comprehensive data type that is the primary building block, or template, of OOP. Class defines attributes and methods of objects, and contains an object’s behavior and data. An object, however, represents an instance of class. As a basic unit of a system, objects have identity and behavior as well as attributes. Make sure candidates respond to the second part of this .NET interview question, addressing how these terms are related to each other. Answer: The relationship is based on the fact that a class defines the states and properties that are common to a range of objects. 6. What is a delegate in .NET? A delegate is a type that encapsulates a reference to a method. Delegate objects can then be passed to code which calls the method according to the method signature, meaning the developer doesn't have to know at compile time which method is being invoked. A delegate can contain references to a single method or multiple methods. Delegates are similar to function pointers in C/C++ and have the advantage of being type-safe. 7. Explain the difference between a stack and a queue. This .NET interview question tests candidates’ basic knowledge of collections. Along with stacks and queues in this category are hash tables, bags, dictionaries and lists. A stack keeps track of what is executing and contains stored value types to be accessed and processed as LIFO (Last-In, First-Out), with elements inserted and deleted from the top end. A queue, on the other hand, lists items on a FIFO (First-In, First-Out) basis in terms of both insertion and deletion, with items inserted from the rear end and deleted from the front end of the queue. 8. What is .NET web service? Web services are reusable components that allow developers to publish an application’s function over the internet to make it accessible and directly interactable with other applications and objects online. Web services communicate by using standard web protocols and data formats - including HTTP, XML and SOAP - allowing them to connect across different platforms and programming languages. ASP.NET provides a simple way to develop web services. The .NET Framework provides built-in classes for building and consuming web services. 9. When should you use .NET Web Forms over ASP.NET MVC? Traditionally, the .NET Framework has been based on Web Forms. This was essentially an effort to create web services using Microsoft’s existing Visual Studio Tools without forcing developers to learn new scripting languages. Web Forms still allows developers to create quick and simple applications, and some legacy systems may still run as Web Forms. ASP.NET MVC is increasingly the standard for contemporary developers, however. In a .NET interview, a strong candidate should be able to highlight the advantages of the Model-View-Controller (MVC) architectural pattern. MVC’s most important feature is that it allows applications to be broken down into discrete models, views and controllers, making them much easier to test during development. 10. What is JSON data, and what is one way that .NET developers can work with JSON? JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) provides developers with a way to organize and store data so it’s easy to access and read. JSON is important for developers because it allows them to manipulate JSON feeds from other sites and to load them more quickly and easily than via SML/RSS feeds.
